Who to "see" when you are having eye problems
Recently, I've had a number patients come in to see me after having gone to their primary care physician or to Urgent Care for various eye problems. They were not getting better from the treatments prescibed by these other docs and the patients were now seeking help from me. Unfortunately, their conditions had been completely misdiagnosed. And that's why they were not getting better in a timely manner. Some examples include:
(1) The urgent care doc who put one of my patients on a sulfa eye drop medication even though she knew the patient was allergic to sulfa. Not only does this fall under the category of 'know what's in the medication that you are prescribing', but most if not all eye doctors haven't Rx'ed a sulfa medication in well over a decade.
(2) A primary care physician who thought the patient had a scratched cornea, when in fact, the patient had a corneal ulcer (imagine a canker sore on the front of your eye!) Corneal ulcers are potentially a blinding condition and require a much more rigorous treatment course than do scratched corneas.
I could go on and on.
In many cases, the delay in proper treatment resulted in a bigger problem which ultimately required a longer and more dramatic treatment courses to resolve. Thankfully, in these and many other cases, I've been able to rectify the issue even when the initial diagnosis has been incorrect.
Moral of the story: When you have an eye problem, go 'see' your eye doctor. Afterall, they specialize in treating that which is ailing you!

Trouble remembering to change your contacts?
Like all of us there is always a million things to do and remember. It can be difficult to remember the last time you changed your contacts. Acuvue has solved this problem. If you wear any Acuvue brand contact you can sign up for their Acuminder program. Acuminder will send you an email, or a text reminding you when to change your contacts as well as when it's time to see Dr. Tim again for a new prescription. What a great way to take something off of your list to remember and helps keep your eyes healthy and comfortable!

The Great Minnesota Get Together!
The only good thing about the end of summer is it means that the State Fair is here! There is something about the State Fair that makes you have to go every year even though it is exactly the same as the years past. Who am I kidding, you go to the fair to eat all of the greasy food you want without feeling guilty!
This year Margo and I had a mini work excursion to eat our way through the fair and eat we did! Margaret had 4 cheeses that she had to have by the end of the day:
1. Pretzel and Cheese Sauce
2. Caprese on a stick
3. Cheese Curds
4. Jalapeno Cheese on a Stick
Margaret got all of her cheese and we had a foot long hot dog, french fries and about a gallon of pop between all of us!
Of the many things that we did we found a Mona Lisa cutout that Margaret was perfect for! Do note the fly on her forehead, for some reason the flies just love her!
Here I am, with Margaret's sister Anne, enjoying our cheese curds and picklesickle.
Margaret and Anne enjoying their favorite thing of the entire fair, the bunnies!
Margaret at her second favorite stand of the fair, the Hi Bye Kitty stand. We found the perfect thing for her, Hi Bye Kitty Hair Sticks! You will definitely be seeing her sporting those around the office!
We met up with our new favorite employee, Jason. If you haven't met Jason yet stop in on Saturday and say hi! Jason you are finally official at Art of Optiks, you have made it on the Blog!

The puff goes poof...
Another patient commented today about how great the eye exam experience is now without the "dreaded puff of air" test. As many of you know, Art of Optiks was the second eye clinic in the state of Minnesota to incorporate a new test that replaces the puff glaucoma eye pressure measurement. That new test along with the Optomap retinal imaging -- which essentially eliminates the need for routine dilation of pupils -- has taken the 20th century out of eye examinations. If you haven't experienced either or both of these new precedures, I would encourge you to make an appointment today. Hope to see you soon! Dr. Tim

Contact Lens Care
At Art of Optiks we try to keep our contact lens patients in the best lens technology there is available. Also we try to teach our contact lens patients the proper care for their lenses to reduce the possibility of infection or damage to the eye that can be done by contact lenses if worn incorrectly. For those of you who need a refresher course on contact lens care here is a video from Cooper Vision. If you have any questions please contact Melissa at Art of Optiks.

Spring is in the air!
Spring is on its way (hopefully the temperatures will start realizing it), and it's the perfect time for some spring cleaning. This past week we did some major cleaning at Art of Optiks. There is nothing better then the feeling of getting things cleaned and organized, it's refreshing and makes everyone more efficient. With the busy summer season right around the corner it was perfect timing.
As a reminder to all of those doing some spring cleaning, don't throw away old glasses! We take previously worn glasses and donate them to The Lions Club which brings them to people in developing countries.
